Let’s Look at Your Needs: The Hump Day Experiment

(Clarification: I sent this out in my newsletter on Wednesday, hence the Hump Day reference– I’m leaving it in for your enjoyment. And if you’d like to subscribe to my weekly newsletter for coaching tips, tricks, and extra bonuses: click here!)

In the spirit of continuing my experiment theme this month, if you could ask for one thing this week, what would it be?

More time? Some downtime? Rest time? Relaxation time? Quiet family time? Time to work out… a nice dinner date with my partner.

Or maybe it’s feeling less overwhelmed? Having less on your to do list? Some freedom to choose what you really want to spend time on…

These are common threads in the conversations I hear.

What if you could do an experiment this week to see where you can find pockets of time to honor one need?

Maslow Hierarchy of Needs has popped up in a few books & podcasts lately and reminded me of a few good points I wanted to share here.

Starting with the foundational layer: Physiologic: many of my clients are fortunate to have their basic needs ‘met’: food, water, shelter, sleep, clothing. But even then, dare I ask: are you eating nourishing food vs junk on the go? Are you drinking enough water or does coffee and soda make up most of your hydration? Do you have shelter but there’s an endless list of to-dos with it? What about sleep? When did you last feel truly rested?

Last category: maybe you have an abundance of clothing but “nothing to wear” and it stresses you the hell out!

P.S. I have to put a plug in for my sister’s capsule collection program. She’s a personal stylist (Hanna Lee Style) based out of Chicago and has designed a genius program to give you 20 mix-and-match outfits. Check it out here.

How does time affect this need?

In the name of experimentation, what’s one way you could take care of one of these needs this week? Try it and see how you feel. Make time for it.

It reminds me of Lesson 1: Small habits make a big difference from James Clear’s Atomic Habits

Start small and make it a habit that you WANT to have.

Here’s a great summary page of the book for anyone interested.

We could call this the hump day experiment. Start today & try for one week. See how it goes, collect some ‘data’ (i.e. see how you feel), and tweak as needed.

It doesn’t have to be life or identity shattering. It’s one small step towards a you that prioritizes you.

TLDR: HUMP DAY EXPERIMENT

You have needs. Some are basic: i.e. physiologic needs: food, water, shelter, sleep, clothing.

Pick one change you’d like to focus on for the week.

How does your time (or lack thereof) affect this basic need?

Carve out a small amount of time to focus on this need.

Experiment for one week. See how it goes, collect some ‘data’ (i.e. see how you feel), and tweak as needed.
